The Global Trade Organization, within the Anti-Corruption, Trade, and Risk Management (ATR) group of MBO is responsible for global export compliance for Microsoft’s products, services, and technology.

The Global Trade Organization team owns and manages export control processes, ensuring compliance with all applications laws and regulations and provides export subject matter expertise internally and externally.

This role will act as the Group Trade Manager for EMEA primarily responsible for export compliance and trade screening activities in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) business regions for Microsoft. Presence in this region will enable Microsoft’s businesses to compliantly maximize market access, provide speed to market support of Microsoft growth objectives, and optimize efficiencies of shipments and screening scenarios to reduce friction of regulations.

This role will work closely with Microsoft business groups and cross-functional teams in the EMEA region to advise and enable international business strategy while complying with Microsoft Global Trade and regulatory requirements, as well as relevant jurisdiction regulatory requirements as well. This role will also drive continuous improvement in processes and technology of Global Trade’s engagement, from identifying/solving complex exporting scenarios, to collaborating on remediation of identified risk areas / process gaps between the businesses and Global Trade.

Cross-Border Controls & Management

  • Uses advanced trade knowledge to provide research and analysis for day-to-day trade execution projects, and assists in enabling businesses to ensure compliant, efficient, and cost-effective cross-border movements. Leads investigations on trade compliance matters and develops associated correspondence. Classifies goods according to a tariff coding system, administrates import/export licenses, and applies appropriate classifications (e.g., Export Control Classification Number [ECCN], Harmonized Tariff Schedule [HTS]). Proactively identifies gaps and drafts corresponding action plan while ensuring timely completion. Obtains import permits/export licenses in partnership with appropriate departments. Contributes to favorable changes in policy or process related to trade. Communicates business strategy, goals, and how they align to the team’s work.

Compliance

  • Researches government regulations and global trade compliance rules for updated, country-specific information. Performs impact analysis and document for applicable regulation(s). Implements and follows policies that ensure business units are in compliance with country, federal, state, and local regulatory requirements (e.g., International Trade, Anti-Boycott). Oversees the recordkeeping and management of cross border files in accordance with Trade regulations and Company policies. Provides factual support in external audits and investigations. Prepares and submits ruling requests and interface with external agencies. Drafts alternative position papers that are favorable to Microsoft’s trade position, enabling improved administration and the mitigation of future controversies. Uses expertise to monitor trade strategies and changes in trade law against current business outcomes. Provides recommended solutions to minimize trade liability and risks, detailing benefits and risks.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Provides consultation, communications, and awareness to stakeholders in various business functions in order to ensure the compliant, efficient, and cost-effective cross-border compliance. Leverages positive relationships with front-line government decision-makers and provides information and responses to inquiries in support of export/import authorizations. Partners with global stakeholders (e.g., logistic companies, customs brokers) to ensure compliance with export and import control laws and regulations in Microsoft's jurisdictions. Reviews Microsoft transactions and performs screening of entities and customers for trade compliance. Drives inclusion by proactively listening to diverse perspectives to better understand Microsoft's business for optimal business and compliance outcomes.

Audit

  • Builds and runs reports for import activity and export classification of Microsoft products and services for compliance reviews, audit risk mitigation programs, and government audits. Identifies gaps and risks, and develops remediation plans.

Reporting

  • Drafts global application submissions for export licenses and rulings. Engages cross-functional teams to share information with the business stakeholders about new trade laws and drives for changes to be compliant. Prioritizes information appropriately and plans for reporting needs related to trade compliance. Provides input to the requirements and architecture for trade compliance reporting. Implements controls and sets metrics for trade compliance for a business segment. Implements trade requirements to ensure cost-efficacy within the business.

Advocacy

  • Establishes relationships with key trade officials to position these partners as advocates for Microsoft’s Global Trade Programs.

Training

  • Facilitates global trade compliance policy training for internal business partners. Provides training for new change initiatives.

Process Improvement

  • Helps drive efficiencies for trade processes by monitoring feedback (e.g., from internal controllership), identifying risk areas, and taking corrective action in partnership with management. Partners with management to determine needed updates, institutes policy changes by recommending updates for the Standard Operating Procedures, and provides communication updates. Partners with technology groups to provide capability and functionality to create and update platforms (e.g., billing system).

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Law, or related field AND corporate, trade, or supply chain experience in an export compliance function
    • OR Master's Degree in Business Administration, Law, or related field AND corporate, trade, or supply chain experience
    • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification with ECTI (similar export certification program) or equivalent
    • OR in-country professional trade certifications or licenses.
