Microsoft is looking for an Asset Manager to join the Renewable Energy Team within the Cloud Operations + Innovation Organization. This position will be responsible for the management of a large portfolio of renewable energy contracts in support of Microsoft’s carbon neutral goals. This role will provide the candidate with a unique opportunity to join a high impact team and gain a wide range of exposure to global energy markets. 

The successful candidate will have experience managing wholesale power contracts, fostering strategic commercial relationships, familiarity with global power markets, and demonstrate strong analytical skills through a proven ability to deliver results.  We run a fast-paced and dynamic work environment so the right candidate will be able to move quickly while maintaining quality work product…and have some fun in the process!

  • Manage key commercial relationships with renewable energy suppliers across global markets
  • Onboard new contracts at execution into an asset management platform and develop commercial relationships with suppliers
  • Monitor the progress of contracted assets under construction and ensure compliance with all contractual obligations 
  • Proactively identify opportunities to reduce risk and ensure that contracts deliver renewable energy in line with expectations to meet company goals
  • Track environmental attribute certificate delivery/retirement in accordance with contract provisions and maintain supporting documentation for audit
  • Ensure compliance with relevant local regulatory requirements 
  • Stay informed and communicate market, policy and regulatory changes that could impact contract performance   
  • Track asset P&L and provide input for asset performance reporting to management
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure accurate information is shared on a timely basis with legal, tax, accounting, and finance
  • Monitor contract settlements and implement tools for independent verification to ensure accurate invoices and timely payments
  • Provide support for contract negotiations with actionable feedback on vendor performance and portfolio risks and opportunities
  • Support the development of a platform of analytical and management tools to optimize the renewable energy portfolio 
  • Leverage existing Microsoft portfolio management tools and support the continued improvement of tools, templates, and strategy 

Knowledge, experience, and skills: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, business administration, engineering, sustainability, or related field. Equivalent work experience will also be considered.
  • 4+ years of experience in the energy sector with exposure to wholesale and/or retail power markets or renewable energy
  • 2+ years of experience in energy asset management or contract management
  • Proficiency with MS Excel and other MS Office suite products
  • Strong analytical capabilities and attention to detail to support review and interpretation of renewable energy contracts and ensure vendor compliance
  • Proactive team player with high emotional intelligence capable of adapting to ambiguous environments with cross-group collaboration and problem-solving abilities
  • Growth mindset with problem-solving skills 

Preferred, Not Required

  • A post-graduate degree in a relevant field is a plus, though experience in consulting and power/energy industries may substitute for relevant graduate education 
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or other interpreted programming languages and/or data-querying skills such as SQL
