Principal Renewable Energy Originator - Microsoft

We are looking for Principal Renewable Energy Originator who will be responsible for global sourcing, negotiating, and managing renewable energy projects for Microsoft’s Cloud & Infrastructure Organization (CO+I). Candidates must demonstrate prior experience and knowledge of renewable energy procurement with an emphasis on corporate procurement, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) wholesale energy markets, large-scale energy portfolio management, finance, and energy policy.

Open to 100% remote in the U.S.

The role of Principal Renewable Energy Originator the will focus on the following key areas:

  • Assist in developing/defining strategy and executing renewable energy transactions globally
  • Source and negotiate risk-mitigated renewable energy contracts
  • Contribute to identifying partners to help Microsoft scale renewable energy procurement in global markets, including APAC and EMEA
  • Maintain renewable energy vendor relationships
  • Manage both Scope 2 and Scope 3 procurement activities
  • Collaborate within Microsoft to build broad strategies across teams, especially those working on energy and risk management (e.g. Finance, Accounting, Treasury, Tax functions)
  • Embody our culture and values

Required/Minimum  Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in finance, engineering, sustainability, mathematics, science, social sciences, or related AND 8+ years of experience with renewable energy projects and PPAs, including any of the following: wholesale and retail power markets, negotiation, reading and writing physical and financial contracts and agreements, or related energy or renewable energy experience.
    • OR Master's Degree in finance, engineering, sustainability, mathematics, science, social sciences, or related AND 6+ years of experience with renewable energy projects and PPAs, including any of the following: wholesale and retail power markets, negotiation, reading and writing physical and financial contracts and agreements, or related energy or renewable energy experience.

      o OR equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years of experience building and maintaining internal and external stakeholder relationships
  • 4+ years of experience in corporate energy procurement and/or Corporate PPA's, project finance, or related.

          Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years of energy or renewable energy experience [solar Photovoltaic, onshore or offshore wind and other technologies].
  • 5+ years of experience negotiating power purchase agreements, ideally both physical and financial contracts for differences, for example “Virtual Power Purchase Agreements”
  • Commercial experience with environmental attributes, aka “Renewable Energy Certificates” (RECs)
  • Excellent understanding of renewable energy incentives and regulatory structures.
  • Broad technical understanding of energy systems and renewable energy technologies, and ability to assess new renewable energy technologies and complementary technologies to identify new opportunities
  • Outstanding project management skills, including experience with appropriate software tools
  • Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver meaningful business results with minimal supervision
  • General business and financial acumen and substantive evidence of customer-service orientation
  • Excellent communications skills (written, verbal and presentation)
  • Effective team player who excels at performing in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Sourcing Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.Learn more about base pay ranges and pay equity: https://careers.microsoft.com/us/en/us-corporate-pay
