On the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team, within Edge + Platform, we build, monitor, and maintain the systems and infrastructure that ensure our customers can quickly access their data and run workloads whenever and wherever they need to. We identify service problems and areas for improvement, and we follow up by fixing those problems. Our work is key to the success of many Microsoft services, and we are looking for a high performing professional to join our team as a Senior Sofware Engineering Manager.

Understand User Requirements:

  • Partners with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine user requirements for one or more complex scenarios. Leverages a variety of feedback channels to incorporate insights into future designs or solution fixes. Leads incorporation of appropriate continuous feedback loops measuring customer value, usage patterns, and other actionable metrics of value. Determines additional critical metrics.

Reliability and Supportability:

  • Leads efforts in the maintenance of live service as issues arise on a rotational, on-call basis. Implements and helps others implement solutions and mitigations to complex issues impacting the performance or functionality of Live Site services. Reviews systematic issues and ensures solutions. Ensures playbooks are logical and understandable. Uses feedback from other solutions to inform preventative measures. Reviews and writes complex issues postmortem and shares insights across teams.
  • Holds accountability as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and mentors other engineers across products/solutions, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions. Alerts stakeholders as to status and initiates actions to restore system/product/service for complex issues. Develops a playbook for the team to resolve issues. Coordinates people and resources to ensure Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) responsibilities are covered across teams. Responds within Service Level Agreement (SLA) timeframe. Has line of sight to incidences and plans to address emerging issues. Leads efforts to reduce incident volume, looking globally at incidences and providing broad resolutions. Escalates issues to appropriate owners.
  • Acts as an expert in design and integration and signs-off on work of others across teams or multiple products on telemetry in systems and products to provide feedback on system behavior such as performance, reliability, availability, usage, and implement safety mechanisms resulting in iterative feedback loops resulting in subsequent designs. Ensures solutions are scalable, financially responsible, and meet capture/storage guidelines. Sets expectations for outputs of telemetry such as notifications or dashboards.

Engineering Excellence:

  • Shares and teaches best practices and teaches others about new tools and strategies. Leads efforts and mentors others to build software developer tools to support other programs and applications to create, debug, and maintain code across products. Uses open source when possible. Holds subject matter expertise in other tools inside and outside areas of expertise. Leads identification of internal tools and creation of new tools that will be useful for creating the product, determining if methods are still applicable for the current solution.
  • Provides technical leadership through efforts to ensure the correct processes are followed to achieve a high degree of security, privacy, safety, and accessibility across solutions and teams. Leads in developing and assures the presence of visible evidence to demonstrate compliance for products. Develops and maintains a deep understanding of the implications of onboarding new technologies following expectations of compliance at Microsoft.

Required/Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

Candidates must be able to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:  

  • Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under U.S. export control regulations, potentially under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations or the Export Administration Regulations.  As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency or other protected status under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3) for assessment of eligibility to access the export-controlled information. To meet this legal requirement, citizenship will be verified via a valid passport
  • Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This position requires verification of U.S. citizenship due to citizenship-based legal restrictions. Specifically, this position supports United States federal, state, and/or local United States government agency customers and is subject to certain citizenship-based restrictions where required or permitted by applicable law. To meet this legal requirement, citizenship will be verified via a valid passport
  • The successful candidate must have an active U.S. Government Top Secret Clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) based on a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) with Polygraph. Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. Failure to maintain or obtain the appropriate U.S. Government clearance and/or customer screening requirements may result in employment action up to and including termination.
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience developing customer-facing processes and solutions at cloud-scale
  • Experience collaborating with/driving projects across large teams (100+)
  • Experience with building cloud-scale infrastructure components
  • Demonstrated technical problem-solving and analytical skills, combined with a strategic orientation, as well as an aptitude for solving complex business problems

Software Engineering M4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
