Senior Software Engineer CTJ - TS - Microsoft

The Microsoft Defender team is responsible for delivering a constantly evolving set of services and solutions to meet the challenging landscape of our ever-evolving attackers.  

This is a combined DevOps team which provides leadership, direction, and accountability for cloud design, service architecture, engineering infrastructure, and data platform development. You will help conduct business reviews and operate our production services. Collaboration skills will be required to work closely with other engineering teams to ensure services and systems are highly stable, meet performance Service level agreements (SLA), and meet the expectations of internal and external customers and users. 

The Microsoft Defender team is responsible for delivering a constantly evolving set of services and solutions to meet the challenging landscape of our ever evolving attackers.

The team provides leadership, direction and accountability for application architecture, Cloud design, Infrastructure development and end to end implementation for our Sovereign and Government Clouds. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will work across team boundaries to determine and develop architectural approaches and infrastructure solutions, conduct business reviews, operate our production services, and deliver engineering contributions across these services. Collaboration skills will be required to work closely with other engineering teams to ensure services/systems are highly stable and performant and meet the expectations of internal and external customers and users. 

Core Responsibilities:

• Build and improve services to be scalable and highly reliable.
• Lead efforts to deliver and improve engineering systems and practices to deliver services in complex cloud environments. 
• Design and automate service scale features and customer requirements.
• Design and implement improvements to our security posture and compliance automation.
• Be part of and provide technical leadership for a Dev-Ops team that handles and remediates customer issues.
• Collaborate across team boundaries to meet the engineering goals in a unified manner
• Contribute to significantly improving the security rigor of our system to be best-in-world.
• Lead the design and implementation of new features as well as add functionality to existing systems.
• Investigate pre-production and production issues, implement, and deploy fixes.
• Participate in an on-call rotation (typically 24/7 for one week every 6-8 weeks) within a secure facility.

If you are highly motivated, self-starter who thrives in a bottoms-up, fast paced, highly technical environment. You have a  customer focus and understand the importance of Live Site. Have demonstrated ability to establish and manage relationships across organizational boundaries. Proven experience dealing with large scale data architecture, operational architecture and or network Architecture. Proven experience creating distributed systems tools of high complexity. You will be responsible for working with various disciplines; Engineers, Researchers, Data Scientists; to address customers’ needs and create new scenarios and features that provide customer value.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

Additional Qualifications:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings:

• Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
• Security Clearance Requirements: Candidates must have an active Top Secret and be willing to upgrade to TS/SCI (with polygraph) or have an active TS/SCI and be willing to upgrade to TS/SCI (with polygraph)

• Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under U.S. export control regulations, potentially under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations or the Export Administration Regulations.  As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency or other protected status under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3) for assessment of eligibility to access the export-controlled information. Preferred/Additional Qualifications: 

• At least 5 years of software development experience in C#, Java, Scala, C++, Go, Python, or similar languages.
• Understanding and experience with CI/CD concepts and Git.
• 5+ years of Windows / Linux hands on system experiences
• Experience debugging issues ranging from the operating system, application, and all the way to the cloud.
• Experienced in solving operational issues in a scalable way. 
• Ability to design and build proof of concepts and manage multiple project phases at the same time. 
• Ability to thrive with the ambiguity associated with working in a fast-paced and changing environment. 
• Exceptional Leadership skills: Sound problem resolution, judgment, negotiating and decision-making skills.
• Support a 24x7 live site support model for the services the team owns.

• Kubernetes, and the Kubernetes satellite technologies
• Proven experience with building and supporting large-scale production services, including logging, monitoring, alerting, and measuring reliability and availability.
• Proficient in at least one scripting language but knows when to move solutions into managed code.
• Exceptional mentoring skills: demonstrated ability to coach less experienced team members, ability to help team members grow technically and professionally. 
• Azure DevOps and GitHub tooling 
• Data mining or data science experiences utilizing Big Data and\or relational database technologies.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Software Engineers, Program Managers, Security Researchers, and Data Scientists

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
