What it is
JazzHR is the entry-level applicant tracking system (ATS) in Employ Inc.’s three-ATS portfolio: JazzHR for small business, Lever for high-growth tech, Jobvite for the upper mid-market. It started in Pittsburgh in 2009 as The Resumator, rebranded to Jazz, and was combined with Jobvite and NXTThing RPO to form Employ in 2021.
The product is deliberately narrow: job posting and syndication to free boards, a resume parser, custom pipeline stages, a searchable candidate database, email templates, interview scheduling with calendar sync, structured interviews, and offer letters with e-signature on the top plan. It is built for a company where the person running hiring is an HR generalist or an office manager, not a dedicated recruiter.
Two things set it apart from the rest of the SMB ATS field. The price is flat and published, not tied to company headcount. And the parent company is a private-equity-backed portfolio that installed a new CEO (Jerry Jao, 2026-02-18) and a new CTO (Patrick Jean) in early 2026 with an explicit AI mandate — so the roadmap is set at Employ level and shared across three products.
Why it shows up in recruiting stacks
- The cheapest published price for a real ATS. Hero runs $1,000/year, Plus $3,480/year, Pro $5,508/year on annual billing, per JazzHR’s pricing page checked 2026-09-25. None of the three plans is priced on employee count, so hiring your 21st or 101st employee does not move the bill.
- Plus is where the product becomes usable. It lifts the job cap from 3 to 200 active jobs and adds AI candidate matching (TalentFit, which scores resumes against the job description and lists what a candidate has and lacks), structured interviews and assessments, and task automation.
- Employ’s AI program reaches it. The AI Screening Companion Employ announced 2025-11-13 ships across all three of its ATSs, and VONQ’s chat-and-voice AI screening went live inside JazzHR on 2026-06-17 as an add-on you switch on per job.
Pricing
Published list prices, annual billing, checked 2026-09-25:
- Hero — $1,000/year (about $83/month). Job postings “starting at 3.” Third-party pricing reviews report extra Hero jobs at $9 each per month.
- Plus — $3,480/year (about $290/month). Up to 200 active jobs, AI matching, structured interviews, automation, standard reporting.
- Pro — $5,508/year (about $459/month). Adds offers and e-signatures, advanced visual reporting, a custom report builder, and all-access support.
Month-to-month billing costs more; JazzHR says annual saves up to 24%. Third-party reviews report unlimited users on every plan; the pricing page does not state it, so get it in the order form. VONQ screening and other consumption-priced add-ons sit on top. Implementation is self-serve and typically costs nothing beyond staff time.
The real-world band for a 20-150 person company is $3,480-5,508/year, because Hero’s job cap pushes almost everyone hiring more than a few roles at once onto Plus.
Best for
An HR generalist or founder at a 20-150 employee company buying its first ATS, hiring 5-40 roles a year across hourly and salaried positions, who wants a fixed annual bill and does not need a talent CRM or deep funnel analytics.
Versus the alternatives
- Workable — one of the two SMB market-share leaders and the head-to-head this page exists to settle. Workable’s published plans start at $3,588/year and scale with company headcount; it has a stronger sourcing database and more polished AI. Pick Workable when sourcing passive candidates matters and headcount is under about 50; pick JazzHR when you expect to grow headcount fast and want the bill to stay flat.
- BambooHR — the other volume leader in this band, whose hiring module rides on the HRIS. Pick it when you are buying an HRIS anyway and hiring is light. JazzHR integrates with BambooHR, so the two also run side by side.
- Ashby — the fastest-growing ATS entrant. Pick it over JazzHR when hiring is mostly knowledge workers and reporting is a buying criterion; expect to pay several times more.
- Zoho Recruit or Manatal — pick them when the budget is under $1,000/year or you already run Zoho.
- Lever — Employ’s own next rung. Move up when you pass roughly 150 employees and need a talent CRM.
Watch-outs
- Hero’s 3-job cap is the real entry price. At $9 per extra job per month, a team with 8 open roles pays about $1,540/year on Hero — close to half of Plus without its features. Guard: count your peak concurrent openings over the last 12 months; above five, price Plus from the start.
- Reporting is thin below Pro. Reviewers consistently report exporting to spreadsheets to see stage aging and source quality. Guard: list the three funnel questions you must answer each quarter and test them in the trial before signing, or budget for Pro.
- Roadmap is shared across three ATSs under PE ownership. New Employ AI features have tended to land in Lever or Jobvite first, and portfolios like this consolidate. Guard: get GA dates for any AI capability you are buying in JazzHR written into the order form, and confirm a full candidate-data export in a neutral format.
- AI screening shifts compliance to you. If you enable TalentFit or VONQ ranking for roles in New York City or other jurisdictions that regulate automated employment decision tools, the audit and notice obligations sit with the employer. Guard: check with counsel before turning on AI ranking for regulated locations, and keep a human decision on every rejection.
